Unscented toiletries.
Have you thought about the amount of hidden chemicals in products you use? Anything that says “fragrance” could be undisclosing a plethora of potentially harmful substances for your skin and hair, not to mention breathing into your lungs and bloodstream. We are unwittingly polluting our bodies, our homes, our vulnerable others and there is no law so far to say that manufacturers have to disclose the composition of that fragrance.
With that in mind we have started to promote a range of unscented products – please note this is not scent-masking – Scent-masking is also a trick of the trade, to mask a smell or fragrance pretending it is “fragrance-free”. We are promoting products like Lemon Tree lip balm, Haoma soap and Pure Nuff Stuff that do not contain ADDED fragrance – no essential oil, and certainly no synthetic toxins!
The lip balm, hand cream, crystal deodorant and sunscreen contain no added fragrance, nothing extra to irritate you or the people and pets around you. We have also looked into the subject of maternal/parental odour and how this affects the feeding and relationship between a new born and their mother/parent. The bond between a new born baby and parent can be potentially strengthened when the baby can gain trust by recognising their parent via their sense of smell (their sight is still developing). Baby wants to smell you, not your perfume or aftershave or fabric conditioner! Studies have shown how the scent of their feeding parent whether breast or bottle fed can calm, soothe and encourage natural physical feeding responses in baby. Using perfume-free products also helps in cases of skin sensitivity, Melasma and skin during pregnancy and beyond see here British Skin Foundation. It is an interesting route to explore if you have sensitive skin.

Vinegar is the best!

Since Lockdown we have started using vinegar all over the home – we use a solution as kitchen spray wipe, mix it with bicarbonate of soda and citric acid in the bathroom and we no longer use fabric conditioner – that’s right, we use vinegar and essential oils in our final rinse. We would encourage you to try it, it is truly remarkable, inexpensive, free of toxins and volatile compounds that may effect your health. The difference in our towels after only two washes; the absorbency has improved considerably.
Kitchen spray:
use 1 third vinegar, 2 thirds water, essential oils to your liking. Add a few drops of grapefruit seed extract (GSE) if you have it for extra anti-viral oomph. The vinegar scent does not linger for very long but adjust it to your own liking. Imagine what you are smelling and how that is being absorbed by your body- better that it’s vinegar and not toxic chemicals that will struggle to break down!
Fabric conditioner alternative; approx 50 ml for 8kg load, add essentials oils that you like but it isn’t even necessary. There is no vinegar smell! just a simple washed freshness!
There are now many eco- friendly cleaning alternatives:

Wow! look at this amazing bamboo/mix electric toothbrush by Brushboo.com. It is an electric toothbrush with sonic vibration. Up to 45,000 vibrations per minute. I would love to see a video of this in action! VERY ECO-FRIENDLY – the replaceable brush heads are made of bamboo and the bristles are made of castor vegetable oil – how innovative!
There is plastic – the handle is a plastic material. They explain “Our initial intention was to make it out of bamboo, as well as the brush heads, however, we could not guarantee its durability and waterproofing. We wanted to create a long-lasting electric toothbrush, one that will be with you forever and that you will only need to change the brush head every 3 months or so, so we decided to make it completely waterproof and water resistant”. Hats off to them, this is a brilliant start – plant based bristles is excellent! So many have failed at this point. Every Action Counts and here we see effort, commitment and affordable innovation.

Hempseed Oil.
We can’t express enough how important hempseed oil is – this oil is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 and is reputed to be easier to digest than any other plant oil. Omega 3 and 6 are beneficial for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, supporting a healthy heart and improving joint health. Research has shown that GLA which is contained within the oil, can help eczema, arthritis and PMT. How much to take depends on your unique body and you should always consult a doctor prior to making any radical lifestyle or dietary changes. A great way to explore how the plant world can support you is to see a naturopath, find one near you. They can look at your lifestyle, what food you eat and which products you use, your exercise regime, your mental health status, all these things and more that affect your enjoyment of everyday life.
Please see here for The Hemp Shop for a very good quality hempseed oil capsule.
With all these things, moderation is the key. Drink plenty of water, sleep well and dose up on sunlight sensibly. Added to that mantra is reduce your screen time!
